How to Get Rid of Moles in Your Yard

If you have put hours and hours of hard work and sweat into creating a lush and beautiful lawn, nothing can be more disappointing than the tell-tale signs that a mole is tunneling underneath your yard. As moles dig their tunnels, they create clear entrances and exits that will be marked by chunks of dirt. While a couple of moles can actually help to eliminate bugs and aerate your lawn, too many moles in one area can cause damage to root systems. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to get rid of moles and prevent them from entering your yard in the first place.

Reduce Access to Food

The main source of food for moles is grubs. You can help get rid of moles by eliminating grubs in your yard. While insecticides can be used to reduce the grub population, you can also add nematodes to your landscape. This is a natural solution that will be beneficial to your landscape as a whole.

Use a Repellent

Repellents that are safe for pets and humans can be applied to the yard. Castor oil is one natural repellent that will cause digestive problems without actually killing the mole. This will make your yard much less attractive. You can add three tablespoons of castor oil and one tablespoon of dish soap to a gallon of water and apply the mixture to the mole tunnels.

Purchase Sonic Spikes

This product can be purchased at your local hardware store and works by emitting irritating sounds into the ground. While you won’t hear anything, it will create an uncomfortable environment for the moles and send them looking for a new home.

Keep Your Yard Neat

Moles are looking for places to hide, which means that they will gravitate to a messy landscape. Simply keeping your yard clean can help prevent moles from entering your yard.

Call the Professionals

Pest control professionals will use many of the same techniques along with other proven methods. They may use traps to capture and rehome the moles. If you haven’t had much success with your own mole removal efforts, it may be time to call PMi Pest Management.
