If you have noticed small droppings around the house, teeth marks in wood and food packages, and other signs of rodents, it is time to take action. Closing off entry points should be a top priority as you address your rodent problem, so let’s take a closer look at how these rodents are even able to enter your home.
Cracks in the Foundation
Mice are able to slip through gaps the size of a dime. With gaps that small, you may not have even noticed that there are cracks in the foundation. That makes it important to regularly inspect your foundation and fill any cracks.
Gaps around Doors and Windows
Other common entry points are cracks around windows and doors. Sealing these gaps and installing new weather stripping will prevent drafts and help keep rodents outdoors.
Ripped Screens
Make sure your door and window screens are free of rips and holes. A mouse or rat can easily take a tiny rip and chew a bigger hole so that they can easily enter the home.
Rubber Gaskets
Rubber gaskets are commonly installed around exhaust pipes. While this helps to seal off the pipe entry point, rubber isn’t much of a match for determined mice and rats. These pests are power chewers that will continue to patrol your home looking for an entry point.
Plastic Vent Covers
Again, a plastic vent cover won’t be enough to deter rodents. Try to use strong materials whenever possible so that rodents aren’t able to chew their way inside.
Any little hole, rip, or crack can provide an entry point for rodents. Conducting routine inspections and sealing off any gaps can go a long way to avoiding any rodent problems. This is especially important before winter sets in and rodents go looking for food, water, and a warm shelter. For additional help keeping your home rodent-free, call PMi Pest Management.
