Are Bed Bugs a Health Issue? What Could Happen?

Bed bugs are a clear nuisance, but do they actually pose a threat to your health? How worried should you be if you start finding these critters around the edge of your mattress and in your home? Fortunately, bed bugs don’t present any major health issues to humans, but there are some important facts you should know about what happens when they invade your home.

Bed bugs are a human parasite, which means that they need to feed off of us to survive. Humans and bed bugs have safely co-existed together since practically the beginning of time. It would go against their evolutionary best interest to pass on diseases to their primary food source. As a result, they are relatively harmless to humans.

Symptoms of Bed Bug Bites

The worst health symptoms associated with bed bugs is itching caused by the bites. Each individual will react differently to the bites. Some people may experience mild welts that look and feel like mosquito bites. Others may develop larger bumps within a few days of being bitten. For those with itchy bites, it can be hard to resist scratching and that is where the trouble can start.

Scratching the bites causes abrasions on the skin, which can open the door to bacteria. If you scratch your bites with dirty hands or your open sores come into contact with bacteria, you could develop an infection that may need to be treated by a doctor.

Unlike other pests that can transmit diseases to humans, bed bugs don’t pose any major health risks. The worst possible scenario is that your bites become infected after persistent scratching. However, that doesn’t mean that you should have to live with these pests. If you notice bed bugs or red bloodstains on furniture and around the edge of your mattress, take action immediately. Addressing the problem will save you some itching, allow you to sleep peacefully, and prevent the bugs from spreading.
